01 / Tee shots / Practice guide

Driver.

Make your tee shot a measurable skill. Start by finding the center of the face, then practice sending the ball into a chosen corridor.

Two landmarks make a useful target window.
Understand the shot

Start with contact, then direction

A long drive that misses your target is not always a better drive. First learn where you strike the face, then pick a fairway-sized window and measure starts inside it. Change only one setup variable at a time so you know what helped.

Set up your session

Tee the ball so roughly half of it sits above the driver crown when the club rests behind it. Pick a precise target and set two landmarks as your fairway gate. This is a starting setup, not a rule for every swing.

What to measure

Pick one of the drills below and write down its score. Repeat it on another day before changing your practice plan. A small trend is more useful than one perfect shot.

Three drills you can use today

Choose one drill for your session. Each gives you a clear result to compare next time.

Face map

15 balls · Learn your strike pattern before changing your swing.

  1. Apply impact spray or foot powder to the face.
  2. Hit five normal shots and mark whether each strike is heel, toe, high, low or center.
  3. Change one thing, such as tee height, and hit five more. Keep the setup that improves contact.

Fairway gate

12 balls · Turn direction into a score.

  1. Pick two distant landmarks that form a realistic fairway width.
  2. Use your normal routine and hit 12 drivers, changing your exact aim between shots.
  3. Record how many balls start inside the gate. Track that number next session.

Controlled-speed ladder

12 balls · Find the speed at which your strike stays predictable.

  1. Hit four balls with a shorter swing at an easy pace.
  2. Hit four at a moderate pace, then four at your usual speed.
  3. Compare strike marks and starts inside the target window.
Practice note: Measure what the ball did, not just how the swing felt. A pattern over several shots is more useful than one miss.
When shots go wrong

What your miss might tell you

These are starting checks, not a diagnosis from a swing video. Make one small change and compare several shots.

Heel strikes

Move a little farther from the ball as an experiment; then recheck the strike mark rather than guessing.

Toe strikes

Check distance from the ball and balance. Make a small setup change and compare five shots.

High or low on the face

Test tee height in small steps while keeping the same target and tempo.

Wide misses

Use the fairway gate at a comfortable speed before chasing maximum distance.
