Chipping.

Choose a landing spot, learn the rollout and turn short shots into a repeatable decision rather than a guess.

LANDROLL
The landing spot is the first target; the hole is the final one.
Understand the shot

Land it first, then learn the roll

A chip has two parts: the carry to the first bounce and the roll after it lands. Practicing those parts separately makes club choice easier. Start with a simple lie and a landing zone you can see.

Set up your session

Use a practice green where chipping is allowed. Place a towel or safe marker on the green as a landing zone. Pick a clear area and give other golfers room.

What to measure

Pick one of the drills below and write down its score. Repeat it on another day before changing your practice plan. A small trend is more useful than one perfect shot.

Three drills you can use today

Choose one drill for your session. Each gives you a clear result to compare next time.

Towel landing zone

15 balls · Train the first bounce.

  1. Place a towel at your chosen landing spot.
  2. Hit five balls from each of three nearby lies with the same club.
  3. Count first bounces on the towel, then notice where each ball finishes.

Two-club rollout

12 balls · See how loft changes the finish.

  1. Choose one landing spot and one starting point.
  2. Hit six chips with a pitching wedge and six with a sand wedge.
  3. Compare carry and rollout; note which club fits each hole location.

Three-lie challenge

9 balls · Transfer practice to different lies.

  1. Play three balls each from fairway, fringe and light rough.
  2. Pick a landing spot before every shot and use your normal routine.
  3. Score balls that finish within one putter length of the hole.
Practice note: Avoid placing loose objects where a moving club could strike them. Follow the practice facility’s rules.
When shots go wrong

What your miss might tell you

These are starting checks, not a diagnosis from a swing video. Make one small change and compare several shots.

Leaving chips short

Check whether the ball lands short of your chosen spot or rolls less than expected.

Running chips long

Keep the landing spot fixed and try a more lofted club to compare rollout.

Heavy contact

Practice from an easy lie with small swings and steady balance.

Different lies surprise you

Run the three-lie challenge and write down what changes in carry and roll.
